Voice Banking

Users about to lose the ability to speak can now re-create their voice synthetically, enabling them to keep this essential part of their identity. Meet our cutting-edge service ‘my-own-voice’.

Register your voice

Voice banking is a process that allows a person to record a set list of phrases with their own voice, while they still have the ability to do so. This recording is then converted to create a personal synthetic voice.

When the person is no longer able to use their own voice, they can use the synthetic voice in speech-generating communication devices to generate an infinite number of words and sentences. The voice created will be synthetic and not be a perfect replica of the person’s natural speech, but it will bear some resemblance.

Create a voice with the ‘my-own-voice’ service

(With or without the support of a speech therapist)

My-own-voice is a web service created to make it easy for anyone to create a synthetic voice. The service can be used without any particular knowledge or equipment, other than a computer, a headset and an internet connection.

The service presents the user with a script of 1,500 sentences (fewer depending on the language) that the user needs to record into the system. These sentences will then be processed and used to create the text-to-speech voice.

The voice created, based on a fully recorded script, will be available in 3 formats:

  • ‘Colibri’ (based on Hidden Markov Model technology)
  • ‘Standard’ (based on unit selection – standard technology used for the voices in the Acapela portfolio)
  • ‘DNN’ (based on Deep Neural Networks technology)

Each voice is unique and the result of the ‘my-own-voice’ (regardless of the format selected) will differ between patients. It will be up to the patient to select their favourite voice within the range of the 3 formats.

The DNN format will soon become the ‘new’ standard in the speech industry, as it enables individuals to create custom voices quickly and based on a small number of voice recordings.

The DNN format is currently available for a limited set of languages. Contact us for more information.

Use your own voice in your favourite application

Once the synthetic voice has been created it can be used for free in a type&talk box on the website and then be  purchased for use with SAPI on Windows, with Google TTS API on Android, or in a partner application (including iOS-baed application).

Please note that, initially, the service is free, until you decide to use the voice in a specific application, giving you the possibility to test and verify the quality of the voice, or even re-record it, before purchasing anything.

Easy recording

The recording process is application-based (Windows or Mac-OS X) and has been adapted to make it accessible to anyone, free from all  the technical difficulties usually handled by a professional recording studio. The use of a headset will be enough to guarantee good quality. The script has also been adapted, shortened and simplified to make sure that all users can record their voices, taking into account the difficulties and tiredness they may experience during the recordings.
